Skincare company Erno Laszlo has a storied history: Dr. Erno Laszlo opened his first institute in 1927 in Budapest, and then opened one in New York City in 1939. There, he introduced clients such as Greta Garbo, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe to his signature double cleanse, a skincare ritual utilizing both an oil and a soap bar. Monroe’s favorite moisturizer was Erno Laszlo Phelityl Night Cream, and a bottle of it was photographed on her bedside table when she passed away.

The company recently reintroduced Phormula 3-9, part of the original Phormula 3 range Laszlo created for high-profile clients. (Phormula 3-8 was designed to fade the scar on Monroe’s stomach.) The base of today’s Phormula 3-9 is the original Dr. Laszlo’s core components: essential fatty acids, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory ingredients, and a phelityl complex.

We talked to Kristy Watson of Erno Laszlo, for her travel and beauty tips.

How often do you fly?

About once a month. I fly to Asia twice a year for weeks at a time, visiting three to five cities. I also go to Europe twice a year. And that’s just for work. I also travel personally – it adds up to lots of miles and fun, interesting trips. I’m always exhausted and inspired at the same time.

What are your favorite destinations and hotels?

I love Shanghai, London, and Paris. I’m really enjoying Central America – I have traveled to Nicaragua twice. I used to live in San Diego, and whenever I go back, I make a weekend out of it by staying at the Hotel Del Coronado or driving up to Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. I love Napa Valley. In a hotel, I appreciate good service and attention to detail and a simple, elegant design.

What do you do on long-haul flights to make it feel more like a spa?

  • I drink a ton of water and no alcohol, ever.
  • I get up every hour and stretch – it’s important to keep the circulation moving.
  • I apply a sleep mask before I fall asleep on overnight flights and land refreshed and hydrated. I don’t board wearing a lot of makeup so my skin is ready for the mask.
  • I eat super light – fresh fruit and nuts.
  • I enjoy a good book and relax.
  • I always bring socks and a scarf. Whether it’s summer or winter, I always run cold.

Any book and entertainment recommendations?

Reading on a long flight is pure bliss. I loved Hillary Clinton’s book, What Happened. I also bring the New York Post, Time, and/or The New Yorker. I like to read the New York Times on a morning flight. I bring People to stay current.

I just watched The Founder and loved it. I also enjoyed Banking on Bitcoin, which I watched on my last flight to London.

What’s always in your travel bag, whether it’s for a weekend getaway or two-week trip?
